Health is more than just your physical wellbeing. In fact, health could almost be defined as a state of physical, mental, and social well-being. Let’s take a look at some health and wellness tips for women that will enhance their livelihood.

1. Eat a Well-Balanced Diet

Eating a well-balanced diet will help you feel happier, be at a healthier weight, and contribute to your long-term physical well-being. The “right” type of diet will depend upon the individual, as it is dependant on one’s lifestyle and needsHowever, a well-balanced diet should consist of:

  • Plenty of fruits and vegetables.
  • White meat like chicken and fish, which is rich in omega-3 fatty acids.
  • Whole grains instead of processed starch food.
  • Plenty of water throughout the day.

Certain types of diets will be right for different people. Before jumping on “fad” diets, take time to research them and understand how they will impact your health.

2. Practice Good Sleep Hygiene

There is more to getting a good night’s sleep of 8 to 10 hours. Your bedroom should be a place where you get rest, not where you do work or entertain yourself. The National Sleep Foundation out of the United States suggests:

  • Setting a sleeping schedule.
  • Getting yourself into a routine before you go to bed and when you wake up.
  • Optimising your bedroom (making sure you have the heat or air conditioning set at the right temperature, having the right bedding, and blocking out light/noise).
  • Finding the most comfortable position to sleep in.

Changing hormone levels may cause one to have difficulty falling asleep, as well as more sleep disruptions. Therefore, women experiencing PMS may have more difficulties in getting a good night’s sleep.  Addressing some of the issues that agitate your PMS, like stress, will help you sleep better.

3. Eliminate Stress From Your Life

According to the American Psychological Association, women are more likely to be stressed than men and almost 50% of women report that they have some level of stress in their life. There are a few ways to help mitigate stress, whether it happens at work or at home:

  • When working, take regular breaks to relieve stress.
  • Develop a schedule that helps you get through your week, but also gives you time to do the things you like to do.
  • Practice activities like deep breathing, meditation, and yoga to help you get through stressful periods of your week.
  • Identify the causes of stress in your life, whether they be relationships or daily experiences, and work on improving them.

4. Make Sure To Consume the Right Amount of Vitamins & Minerals

If you eat the right foods, you will get plenty of complex B vitamins, vitamin D, vitamin E, calcium, and magnesium. These vitamins and minerals will help:

  • Maintain healthy energy levels in your body.
  • Play a role in reducing PMS symptoms.
  • Regulate hormone levels in the body.
  • Maintain bone mineral density.

At the end of the day, supplements contain vitamins and minerals to help you meet your daily requirements. Scarlet also can help you get these vitamins and minerals, as well as wild yam and chasteberry, to help maintain a good menstrual health.

5. Protect Yourself From the Sun

Your skin is the largest organ in your body. As your body ages, it makes less of a substance called collagen, which helps maintain a youthful looking appearance in your skin. Protecting yourself from the sun will help you maintain young-looking skin. Here are some tips for when you are out in the sun:

  • Make sure to wear a hat or sunglasses when outdoors.
  • Try to limit your direct time in sunlight, no more than a half hour is recommended depending upon your skin type, and apply sufficient subblock.
  • Try doing outdoor activities earlier in the morning, when the sunlight is less intense.

6. Get Women’s Health Checks Regularly As Recommended

There are different types of health checks that you should get at regular intervals. These include regular breast screenings, pap smears, and other types of health exams. Starting at around 45, it is recommended that you get a mammogram annually. If your annual pap smear is regular, you should plan on getting one once every three years.

7. Educate Yourself On Women’s Health Issues

According to the charitable organization Days for Girls, 500 million women globally experience some form of period poverty, where they don’t have access to menstrual health products or education. Even if you don’t experience period poverty, make sure that you educate yourself on key women’s health issues.

8. Make Physical Activity a Part of Your Life

According to the WHO, one out of four people globally do not get enough exercise. Some people don’t have enough time in their schedule to make it to the gym, but these are some things that can help:

  • Take the stairs instead of the elevator.
  • If you drive to work, try taking public transportation a few days out of the week, because there will be some walking involved.
  • The Mayo Clinic suggests at least 30 minutes of moderate physical activity each day to maintain optimum health.

9. Begin Each Day With Something Positive

Starting out the day with something positive will help you have a better overall day and will help you focus on your mental wellbeing. Journaling, spending some time on a brief walk, or one of your hobbies can help cultivate a positive mindset so that you can make it through your day. A study by the American Psychological Association showed that people who are happy tend to do well across multiple domains, including friendship, relationships, work success and health.
