Managing your period on a holiday doesn’t have to be stressful. Some people choose to hack their cycles and  when they will get their next period, with the assistance of their doctor. However, for those who wants to keep it all natural, you can still enjoy your holiday even when you’re having your period.

Pack all your period necessities

In your luggage, make sure that you pack a sufficient supply of tampons or pads, including a buffer of 20% more. You should also include at least two days worth of period supplies in your carry-on travel bag. This way, you can address your period if you are on the plane or out in public and don’t want to go back to your hotel or the place where you are staying. Make sure that your travel kit contains plenty of wet wipes and other items that you might need.

Always plan ahead

You can start planning ahead by charting your cycle regularly beforehand. This can help you pick a date to fly if you are going on holiday by plane. You can also plan certain activities into your itinerary and still enjoy the things that you would like to do during your holiday. For example, you may want to plan more of the land activities during your period, and the water activities after your period ends.

Research beforehand for the nearest grocery store

Before leaving for your trip, you may want to do some research beforehand for the nearest pharmacy or grocery store to where you’re going to stay. In the event if you do run out of the things that get you through your period, you will know where to go to stock up on the things you need and not panic.

Watch what you eat and drink

Hydration is often overlooked when traveling. Did you know that on a 10-hour flight, most women will lose about 1.6 litres of water? Low humidity in the aircraft can cause one to lose water due to evaporation, therefore it is important for one to remember to keep hydrated when flying. Drinking sufficient water will prevent you from having side effects of dehydration such as headaches or lightheadedness. You may consider bringing with you an empty bottle onboard the aircraft, and getting the flight attendant to fill it up with water throughout. Avoid alcohol or soda as they are diuretics.

Enjoying good food is an important part of being on holiday. However, do remember to enjoy everything in moderation. Avoid eating excessive food high in calories or fats, and balance it with fruits and vegetables as well.

If you take supplements regularly to augment your diet, do remember to bring them along your trips and continue taking them. Understand stress when traveling

According to some US-based research from back in 2017, stress causes about 1 in 3 people to cancel their trip. Stress can be even worse when you are on your period. Here are some ways to help mitigate stress when traveling:

  • Make an itinerary: Nearly 2 out of 3 people report being stressed because of too many choices while on their trip.
  • Leave anything related to work at home: Most people don’t feel relaxed while on their vacation until they are into their second day. Leaving work at home will help you focus on relaxing, even if you are on your period.
  • Avoid stressing out with your partner: Stress while on your holiday can make your period worse. In fact, 1 in 4 people have broken up with their significant other while traveling. Make sure that you and your partner feel good about the trip, plan it, and have a plan for dealing with stress.

Enjoy your holiday

Use your time off to relax and enjoy being away from the “grind” of the year. The holiday season is an important time to forget about work and enjoy family and time off.
