Gender Equality for a Sustainable Tomorrow

Gender Equality

March 21, 2022

The United Nations, in 2015, set several goals to meet by 2030 for improvements towards global sustainability, ranging from eliminating poverty to closing the gender gap. In the years before the pandemic, gender equality only improved marginally for women. Let’s take a look at the current state of gender equality for women throughout the world and see where improvements can be made.

The Gender Parity Score

In 2015, the McKinsey Institute created a measurement of gender equality. A zero indicates that there is no gender equality for a particular area while a score of one indicates that there is total gender equality. In areas of employment there have been great strides in some countries that are increasing women’s rights at work. These include some improvements in salary, benefits, and other measures. When it comes to education, in some countries, more women have better access to education than they did decades ago. In areas of health care, menstrual health, and other issues, there is still a lot of work to be done.

How The Scarlet Company Is Helping With Gender Equality By Improving Menstrual Health for Women

Improving menstrual health for women is an important goal for a better, sustainable tomorrow. By knowing what our period care, hygiene, wear, and supplement products are made of and where they came from, we can better understand what is needed to achieve optimal health.

Period Care, Hygiene, and Wear Products

When possible, it is best to look for products that are natural or organic. Natural/organic products like pads, tampons, cups, and wipes are ideal because they are made in a more sustainable manner than traditional products. Some period care products that we are used to purchasing in the store may be made with harsh chemicals and plastics. Here are some of the chemicals and plastics and how they can negatively impact our health:

  • Dioxins: These can be linked to cancer, damage to the endocrine systems, and can hurt reproductive health.
  • Pesticide residues: Residues can cause cancer and also hurt reproductive health.
  • Undisclosed fragrances: Those added fragrances found in many period products can also cause cancer and allergies.

Some period products that are natural/organic can also be beneficial for the environment. For example, bamboo or cotton tampons can break down in as little as 12 to 18 months, whereas products with tampons will take decades to decompose.

Diet and Supplementation

Eating healthy will benefit both the environment and our health. For example, organic food grown on farms is better for the environment because there is less soil erosion and pollution. Food that is sourced organically also tends to come from smaller businesses and by purchasing natural/organic food products, you could be supporting a woman-owned and operated business in your city.

Eating right will help your menstrual health, but most importantly, your overall health throughout the month. Here are some suggestions that you should incorporate into your diet:

  • Plenty of water: This will help you stay hydrated and can reduce water retention and bloating.
  • Fruit: When eaten in the right amounts, food can help you curb sugar cravings.
  • Vegetables: Leafy green vegetables help your body with iron levels if your cycle is heavy.
  • Chicken and fish: These meats are rich in iron, protein, omega-3 fatty acids, and other nutrients that can help you keep your energy levels up and subside other aspects of period symptoms.
  • Lentils, beans, and quinoa: These foods are rich in nutrients and protein to help your body keep its energy levels up.

Supplements are also important. Many people use a blend of supplements to help maintain their menstrual health. Scarlet is a menstrual health tonic that is 100% natural, certified food safe, Halal-certfied, gluten-free, and Vegan. Here are some of the ingredients that Scarlet contains to help sustain your menstrual health:

  • Chasteberry: This helps regulate levels of estrogen and progesterone within your body.
  • Wild yam: This ingredient is an antispasmodic and anti-inflammatory herb. It is known for supporting women’s health.
  • Calcium: This is an element that will help with PMS and pain relief throughout your cycle.
  • Vitamins: Scarlet also contains complex B vitamins, vitamin E, and vitamin D, as well as Magnesium to further help support your health.
