October is Breast Cancer Awareness Month. In the United States, and other countries, breast cancer will impact about 1 in 8 women throughout their lifetime. Around 281,500 invasive breast cancer cases are diagnosed each year. Globally, breast cancer is about 12% of all cancer cases worldwide. Additionally, breast cancer is highly problematic in both older women and women under the age of 45 of different ethnicities. Let’s take a look at some of the ways to take a holistic approach to preventing the likelihood of breast cancer by promoting a holistic approach to menstrual health.

Maintain a Healthy Weight and Diet

If your weight is healthy, strive to keep yourself at that weight. Your doctor can help you with strategies to help cope with being overweight. Reducing the number of calories consumed each day will help you achieve this. Eating healthier foods like leafy green vegetables, fruits, and fish can help increase the hormones in your body that promote good menstrual health.

Maintain a Healthy Exercise Regimen

Exercise and physical activity help prevent being overweight, thus helping reduce the likelihood of breast cancer. Most adults should strive to maintain an exercise plan where they do 150 minutes of moderate activity each week, such as walking, biking, or other light activity. Some adults may feel strong enough to do vigorous activity, like cardio workouts, weight lifting or swimming. 75 minutes of vigorous activity and exercise each week, including strength training, will help the body mitigate the likelihood of breast cancer.

Consider Breastfeeding

Breastfeeding is a strong way to reduce breast cancer. Some research has indicated that for every 12 months a woman breastfeeds her infant, her risk of breast cancer decreases by about 4.3%. The reason for breastfeeding’s countereffect on cancer is that when a woman breastfeeds, she delays her menstrual period. This reduces a woman’s lifetime exposure to estrogen, which in overabundance can lead to breast cancer cell growth.

Make Sure That Your Vitamins and Minerals Are Balanced

The standard battery of vitamins and minerals, like vitamin D, complex B vitamins, magnesium, and calcium are critical for maintaining your menstrual health and hormone levels. Some current research indicates that Vitamin B12 deficiencies can lead to an increased risk of breast cancer. Vitamin D is also one of the most widely studied vitamins to mitigate various types of cancer, including breast cancer. A higher intake of magnesium is potentially associated with a lower risk of breast cancer, while calcium supplementation may play a role in reducing breast cancer onset in premenopausal women.
